Community Acknowledgement

Foremost, I want to recognize that I am a Mozambican immigrant living on the traditional and unceded territory of the Snuneymuxw, the Tla’amin, and the Snaw-naw-as First Nations. I would also like to acknowledge the Cowichan Tribes.

With that said I am very well aware of the negative history of colonialism in settler societies because unfortunately, my country suffered from the same history. I also know that colonialism, generational trauma, and systemic racism continue to negatively affect BIPOC people (Indigenous, Black and People Of Colour). Because of that, there is a need for systems to change so that society can move forward fairly and equitably. One of the ways for that is being inclusive. That is why in my dance classes, everyone is welcome, regardless of race, gender, sexual preference and physical ability. I am also passionate about encouraging change in the community by giving back. I am committed to donating 10% of my net revenue to local organizations and to Milorho - a professional Mozambican Music & Dance Company based in Mozambique.

Over the years I have seen many aspects of African culture appropriated by the Western World. Cultural Appropriation is defined as the inappropriate or unacknowledged adoption of an element or elements of one culture or identity by members of another culture or identity. From my perspective, I see cultural appropriation as a dominant culture taking elements from an oppressed, marginalized or aggrieved culture, without understanding or honouring the cultural significance of what was taken. These elements include dance, practice, hairstyle, a ritual, clothing, food, and more. This is why I am determined to ensure there is a cultural teaching behind all dance movements, rhythms and instruments taught and used in my classes. My hope is that these teachings will instill cultural appreciation in my students.
